The Clay County Commission unanimously passed its budget with no tax increases Monday night.
The budget includes $5.1 million dollars in general expenditures and $11.5 million in the school’s general fund. Mayor Dale Reagan said he feels the the new budget is a good one.
“We were able to give the county employees a three percent increase,” Reagan said. “That was good. That is always good to try and help our employees out, especially during times like this.”
Reagan said the county will keep spending limited with the jail and courthouse underway. Clay County currently has no debt, but when construction on the jail begins, this will change.
“I feel like it was a good budget,” Reagan said. “Now, we got to be conservative. No doubt about it. Lord knows what lays ahead for us. Through the COVID and our neighbors being hit by tornadoes, this COVID has been something else that none of us no the answers for it yet.”
The county’s total budget consist of five funds: general, solid waste ($530,592), courthouse and jail maintenance ($40,300), drug control fund ($78,500) and debt service ($4,000).
Reagan said the next step for the approved project is for Tennessee’s Comptroller’s Office to review the numbers.
