The city of Monterey will extend sewer and water lines at exit 300 on I-40 to allow new businesses to build.
Mayor Bill Wiggins said the new lines will stretch from South Holley Street to the city limits around Bee Rock Road.
“We have six properties out there at exit 300 that would have some commercial appeal once we can get the water and the sewer out there to them,” Wiggins said. “This was an economical development move.”
Wiggins said Gov. Bill Lee and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy saw the potential of the area and rewarded the city a grant to complete the project.
“This was one of just a few grants,” Wiggins said. “This one had the governor’s endorsement. He picked this project to be very important to the town of Monterey.”
Ironwood Construction Inc. was the low bidder with a base bid of $453,000. Wiggins said the time frame for the project will be explained at the next construction meeting for the water lines.
