Highlands Residential Services is working to replace low-income housing units that were torn down a few years ago.
Executive Director Dow Harris said the new development at Hickory Valley will have 48 low-income units.
“The Hickory Valley site is going to be multi-family,” Harris said. “We’ll pick up some of those multi-family units we lost, picking those back up into the Hickory Valley site that will be 48 units of 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedrooms. I think 3-bedroom is as big as we’re going to build.”
Although Hickory Valley is yet to break ground, Harris said HRS is working on their Oak Tree Towers development. That project will yield 50 housing units for seniors 62 and over.
Both developments will be on Buffalo Valley Road in Cookeville.
Highlands Residential Services lost 52 units of low-income public housing units when the Hugh Hargis site on Willow Avenue was demolished.
When HRS is complete with their current building plan, it will have almost 500 public housing units. Harris said HRS is allowed 580 units by the federal government.
