A new facility for Crossville’s non-profit Hilltoppers is being built.
A ground breaking ceremony was held Tuesday. Executive Director Jeanene Houston said this will be the first time they’ll have a new building in the organization’s 45 year history.
“That’s the good thing about this, the new facility, is it’s brand new to us,” Houston said. “We shouldn’t have any maintenance problems for quite some time. We’re excited about that because there’s always something tearing up or going wrong in a building that’s older. We’re excited to be in a new facility.”
Houston said they sold their old facility for $2.8 million and are using the money to build the new one near the recreational park. She said the City of Crossville donated the plot of land.
Hilltoppers provides services for people with disabilities. Houston said although locations are changing, their ability to care for these adults will not change.
“A lot of what we do is the day center, which this will be administrative offices and a day center,” Houston said. “Our folks come in, it’s kinda the hub of what we do. They come into the center, but then they head right back out into the community and do the things they need to do [like] banking, shopping, and recreational kinds of things.”
The old facility is located on Sweeney Drive. The new facility will be named after Houston for her 45 years of service.
