Sparta Ordinance Aims to Allow Sale of Property

The City of Sparta is rezoning a parcel of Property on East Bockman Way in order to sale that property to the White County High School.

According to Sparta Mayor Jeff Young, the high school already uses the property adjacent to the city.

“That is a parcel of property that has a baseball field on it used by the White County High School,” Young said. “We are selling that property to the high school. By rezoning it won’t have any tax implications for the school system, but it will incorporate that into the city limits.”

Young said that the rezoning had benefits both to the city and the high school.

“It was property owned by the City of Sparta that was adjacent to the existing city limits,” Young said, “and since we can’t rezone by ordinance anymore, it has to be done by referendum, we thought since we owned it that would be the appropriate time to incorporate that into the city.”

The ordinance to zone the recently annexed property was to designate it as Commercial C-D.
