Sickness Closes DeKalb, Warren School Systems

Widespread illness has forced the Dekalb County School System to cancel classes for the rest of the week and Monday.

School officials reported a 12-percent absenteeism rate on Tuesday. That number included students and teachers suffering from the flu, strep throat, and stomach viruses.

Warren County Schools will also close Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday due to illness.

The Putnam County School System continues to monitor its absenteeism rate. Interim Director of Schools Corby King said 6.9-percent of students were absent Tuesday and 4-percent of staff.

“We do have a few schools that are elevated between 8 and 10-percent, but that is also normal,” King said. “We monitor daily this time of year.”

The Clay County School System closed last week due to illness. Officials in Overton County canceled classes two weeks ago because of an irregular number of absences caused by sickness.
