Putnam County’s new hazardous waste facility should be completed and operational later this fall.
That according to County Mayor Randy Porter.
“We bid the project out and it’s already under construction,” Porter said. “Hopefully if everything works out right, the building should be completed later this summer and us moving into it sometime this fall.”
The State of Tennessee awarded Putnam County a $480,000 non-match grant last year to build the new hazardous waste facility.
Porter said the new facilty will be convenient for residents needing to dispose of hazardous materials.
“We were having to schedule something once a year at the fairgrounds for the state to come and pick it up,” Porter said. “So the state offered us the grant… if we would build a site in Putnam County so folks on a daily basis could drop off their waste, and not have to store it in their homes and bring it once a year.”
The hazardous waste facility will be located along West Jackson Street near Cane Creek Elementary School in Cookeville. Items such as paints, paint thinners, chemicals, and other materials will be accepted at the facility.
Porter said the county will also construct a new convenience site at the facility. The site will allow residents to drop off normal garbage and recycling.
