Barge Design Group of Nashville will soon work with the City of Livingston to determine how to fix the city’s recent flooding issues.
The city’s Board of Aldermen voted Monday to use $35,000 to begin studying the area around Dillon Pond.
Charlie Smith of Barge Design said his firm will analyze a nearby sinkhole to determine what their choices will be in moving forward.
“We’ve prepared a proposal to do a little bit of surveying, basically to create a model that analyzes the flooding event that happened,” Smith said, “but also looking at standard storms or any way you look at it, 10-year storms, 100-year storms, and see what size of structure you have to have for that safety valve overflow in case that sinkhole doesn’t function.”
Smith later added that using the sinkhole as a permanent solution wouldn’t be viable due to its unpredictability.
The amount paid by the city for the analysis does not cover any construction and only applies to the study. The amount will be applied to the 2019-2020 budget as early as this July.
The City of Livingston experienced record flooding and rainfall earlier this year which caused for a State of Emergency to be issued by County Executive Ben Danner. The flooding closed off Bradford Hicks Drive and Highway 52 for multiple days.
