The City of Spencer has issued a water boil advisory for area residents after a tractor-trailer struck a fire hydrant Tuesday.
Mayor Mickey Robinson said the incident occurred around 5 a.m. near Acument Global Technologies along Industry Drive.
“What had happened was an 18-wheeler had come around the back side of the factory and it had run over a fire hydrant and tore the hydrant out of the main line system,” Robinson said. “So that is the reason why we’re having the issue with the issue with the water and the tanks and everything.”
Robinson said the plant reported the incident while he was checking the roadways for snow. The plant foreman reported water was being run at nearly 900 gallons per minute when the incident occurred, nearly 200 gallons more than average according to Robinson.
“We are in the process of fixing this right now,” Robinson said. “[Myself], the Vice Mayor, and the Aldermen are all sorry this happened to the citizens of Spencer and everybody there. We apologize for this inconvenience.”
The Spencer Utility Department issued a statement saying residents should boil their water for at least three minutes before consumption. An official estimate on how much water was lost has not been determined at this time.
