The Jackson County Historical Society and City of Gainesboro officials look to restore various aspects of the county’s historical museum.
Historical Society President John Fox says the museum has aged and needs multiple repairs.
“The west side of the building is deteriorating. We’re going to have to replace some gutters… [and] some windows,” Fox says. “We’re going to replace some boards and part of the wall structure that has deteriorated over time.”
Fox says restoring the museum will cost approximately $28,000 but will be worth the expense to keep a community resource up and running.
“It is the oldest historical museum in the Upper Cumberland area,” Fox says. “It contains a lot of interesting artifacts, a lot of documents and historical records, genealogical records that people would be interested in and also looking for genealogical information on their families.”
The Historical Society and Gainesboro city officials have opened the bidding process for the project through Thursday, Dec. 27. Fox was unsure whether the museum will be closed during the renovation process, but adds that will be decided once a contractor is selected.
