Cookeville’s 2030 plan unofficially recognizes property on East 10th and Old Kentucky Road as being appropriate for commercial development.
The planning commission voted 9-1 on Monday to amend the city’s future land use concept plan at the request of Titan Development, a company wanting to build a shopping center on the property.
Planning commission member Tracy Cody voted against the amendment and said he never envisioned the property being for commercial use.
“I feel like this property was done in the 2030 plan as residential for a reason and I don’t think it has changed. Like the people said, you’ve got residents on all sides of it,” Cody said. “While I’m all for development, I just don’t think that this would be the right use for this property.”
The amendment must be approved by the Cookeville City Council and for the time being, the property will remain zoned as single family residential.
The Cookeville Planning Commission will consider rezoning the property to Planned Commercial Development when they meet November 26th.
