Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris says the department is moving to change the type of weapons his deputies use.
“We went from a three fifty-seven round to a forty-five round, well at the time that was the thing to do because three fifty-seven rounds, the ammunition was so much more and it was high,” Farris said. “Plus it was a harder round, it was harder to shoot. Now the companies have developed a nine millimeter, which is a round they have gotten as good as the forty-five, if not better.”
The Sheriff’s Department has used these weapons for four years, but the weapons are not worn out yet, Farris said.
Farris proposed moving about 43 thousand dollars from the drug fund to help with the transition.
“We are asking to switch back and we are actually doing a trade. Part of the drug money is going to be used to switch those out,” Farris said. “It is a smaller weapon, we carry more rounds, and it is lighter for the deputies.”
