City Closes On Property For New Police Headquarters

Cookeville has officially closed on the property that will be home to the city’s new police headquarters.

The city closed on the 3.55 acre property on Friday.

“Nobody, with the possible exception of Chief Evans, is anymore excited than I am about being at this point with the new police headquarters,” City Councilman Dwight Henry said. “This has been a priority for this council since we took office and I’m excited about it.”

The property sits at the northeast corner of Neal Street and Old Walton Road. The city signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase the property in December for $600,000.

On Sunday, Mayor Ricky Shelton said a needs assessment is being reviewed to fine tune the space requirements to determine if some space identified in the needs assessment can be eliminated or not.

Shelton said once the city has finished the review and analysis, officials will begin discussing the project at a work session and developing a manageable budget, within the current tax structure.
