Since scammers began using Spanish, the Cookeville Police have too.
Months ago, scammers began calling Cookeville residents, claiming to be the electric department and threatening to disconnect if the resident didn’t make a big payment over the phone. That scam’s still going on, but now the phone number looks legitimate and they’re speaking in Spanish.
Cookeville Police posted notices about the scam on social media over the weekend, including Spanish translations.
The city of Cookeville doesn’t contact customers by phone for payments. All billing and correspondence is done by mail.
