Information from several sheriff’s departments across the Upper Cumberland warn residents not to give their personal information out over the phone.
Officials with both the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said a number of residents have reported receiving phone calls, letters and emails from individuals claiming to be from the IRS. The residents said the calls, letters and emails told them they had an outstanding IRS balance and threatened them. Putnam County deputies said residents have received jury duty scam calls as well.
The IRS doesn’t contact taxpayers by phone or email, the sheriff’s department said. If you’ve received a letter and you’re not sure about it, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Residents can also contact their local law enforcement agencies.
